COLOR POP ULTRA MATTE LIP SWATCHES AND REVIEW

Color pop is/was one of the new makeup brands that took the beauty world by storm! I am assuming the fascination was how affordable they were and how pigmented it was.

Now I usually stray away from liquid  lipsticks because of how pasty they can be and  I have extremely dry lips. Most liquid lipsticks tend to dry and crack my lips faster  (which we all know Hunties is a NO NO!)

It's no wonder it took me a while to catch unto to craze and I must say I'm impressed (I'm not easily impressed).  Color Pop ultra matte lip is actually not as drying as other liquid lipsticks, and they feel more like bare lips (that aren't dry but not moisturized either) rather than chalky lips (hope I'm making sense here)

My only issue is the struggle to get it off when you don't have makeup wipes or a cleansing oil, I understand long wear and no transfer but COME ON THESE BABIES STAY ON LIKE A TATTOO!!

I took pictures of swatches on my arm and also pictures of what they look on my lips because, and I don't know if this happens to everyone else, sometimes the swatches on my arm turn out  completely different on my lips/eyelids (call me weird) ;

I was sent these particular shades by urban_101 on instagram to review for melanin gals who also happen to have dry lips.

I like most of them on, except Embellish which is the darkest brown (reason: I don't  like dark lippies on me)

And for dry lips I'd say moisturize well but after a while they do dry out your lips (so make sure to carry a lip balm)

They retail for 50 Ghc at urban_101

HOW I MANAGE MY KERATOSIS PILARIS

What is keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis Pilaris aka chicken skin are harmless pimple like bumps that appear on your skin, mainly your thighs, the back of your arms or even your buttocks. They give your skin a sandpaper like feel and appearance.

A large number of people have this condition and go years without knowing or treating it.

I have a slight case of OCD (don't we all!). So it's only natural that I used to worry about the bumps I had on my thighs and arms. I was extremely paranoid about this condition without knowing it was even a thing that could be treated. I figured I was just unlucky in the skin department. I would always crave skin that was smooth to touch and silky to look at- Keyword Crave!

If you asked me that was something I could never achieve personally!

One day I was browsing the world wide web (surprise surprise!) when I came across someone talking about chicken skin/ strawberry skin. Still unknowing what exactly that was, I googled the meaning and BOOM! it was the very thing I had spent years worrying about. *Of course they didn't have pictures that did justice to what it looked like on my skin type, chocolate skin, the brown skin I was used to.* So it took me a while and lots' of digging to confirm that was exactly what I was suffering from.

Now if you are anything like me, I'm sure for years your  keratosis pilaris has been a constant nag you haven't gotten quite rid of, but you most likely don't even know it's a thing you can get rid of or even manage. (*subtly trying to blow my own horn and indicate I'm putting you guys onto something! If you already know about keratosis pilaris just stick around and find out how I manage mine. If you don't, worry not and just think of two words- THE PLUG!)

CAUSES?

Build up of keratin that blocks the hair follicles. Simple!

Why it happens? No one knows! (LOL don't quote me please)

People with dry skin are more likely to have keratosis pilaris (again surprise surprise- I was cursed with the northern alligator skin)

TREATMENT;

I try my best to stay away from any soap that dries me out. We have already established that dry skinned gals & guys are most likely to have "chicken skin". And that begins in the shower.

What I do is, I opt for soaps that are creamy and moisturising to my skin (Good ol' shea butter base soaps)

My personal favorite was/is (I haven't been able to use this as much as I would love to because I can't find this in Ghana)  Lush's Porridge soap

Why I love it?

Oats is one of the main ingredients (and later on you'd find out exfoliating is a major step to combating K.P) Oatmeal is great for treating dry skin, eczema and calming inflammation, it also helps to exfoliate your skin (Cha-Ching!)

Organic orange juice is rich is vitamin C which helps lighten your skin naturally and since my bumps have taken a black appearance, this soap helps brighten them and keep my skin clear.

And the smell? ummmm delicious

*A lot of handmade soaps in Ghana have shea butter as their base and that's a great start, however, if you want a store bought soap always look out for soap that targets dry skin

EXFOLIATE !!!!!!

You cannot possibly begin to think of treating keratosis pilaris without thinking of exfoliating! Exfoliating to remove dead skin is major key!! This helps to expose new skin and tame your keratin accumulation.

I used to exfoliate once a week, then I upped my game to every other day now I do it everyday (a bit too much but I'm loving the results plus my mom always said  beauty was pain!)

* I fell off again just to be sure it was what I was doing that was causing the results but I'm back on it.

What I use;

Over the years I have come to appreciate sugar scrubs better than salt scrubs. Now sugar scrubs are less abrasive (for sensitive skin so a salt scrub in this case might be your best bet) than salt scrubs but I personally love how my skin feels after using a sugar scrub and I absolutely hate the feel of any scrub rubbing against my palm 😫.

Tree Hut has some really great inexpensive scrubs that do THE WORK.  The smell is also to die for, so it's no surprise it's the top of my List.

I recently picked this one up from a shop called Shamvikay in dzorwulu and every time I open it the beautiful smell just fills up my bathroom and I come out with my skin practically glowing.

The Next scrub I used and loved (even though it was a salt scrub) is Lush's vodka infused ocean salt scrub.

This scrub almost made me change my mind about salt scrubs, it wasn't too abrasive, smelt and felt delicious and the vodka in it brightened my skin (only issue is, I usually have scratches on my arms from when I sleep and it would burn a bit).

Apart from that this scrub is everything and more when you are dealing with KP

LUSH

I have also used Skin Gourmet's hibiscus and tea tree sugar scrub and it did the work, but I personally hate the smell of tea tree so as much as I loved the results I couldn't use it further. I bought this at the chop Bar in east legon A&C mall.

Skin Gourmet

Save the best for the last! This is a cult favorite and it's on the high end but trust me this scrub puts all the others to shame (because it is directly targeted at treating KP)

It's not just an exfoliator, but acts as a chemical peel and microdermabrasion all in one packaging. I haven't found this in Ghana (that's really the main reason I fell off exfoliating) but if you can get your hands on these babies? Hunty your life would be snatched!

DERMAdoctor

* Bonus step once a week I detoxify my skin using Aztec healing clay before I hop into the shower this cuts down my exfoliating time in half and the results?!! AH-MAY-ZING!

Out of the shower you really want to Moisturize your skin, because if you do not all your hard work in the shower would just go to waste!!!

Good old shea butter does the trick.

I also used raw cocoa butter from skin gourmet and I absolutely loved the smell and the glow it gave my skin after.

Mango butter is also a great moisturizer I have been yearning to try. But I haven't found it in Ghana (surprise surprise)

Again, if you aren't into the hand-made stuff just look out for creams that target dry skin.

Hope this information was helpful, let me know your thoughts and questions.

BEAUTY HAUL & SHOP REVIEW FT @URBAN_101

BEAUTY HAUL FT @URBAN_101
RATINGS: 9/10

Another day another Review (at least it's a good review this time LOL). In my past time I like to stalk makeup vendor's pages' on Instagram, creating a monthly budget of what beauty product I'd love to get . It's no wonder I always come across random shops.

I came across this page the same day I was trying to message @glamandglow makeup so I guess that day was not completely wasted ( I truly have a problem!). I contacted the number in their bio, the response was really quick and the person I was chating with was extremely helpful so it was such a surprise when I went to pick up my stuff and .......... IT WAS A GUY!!!  (+2)

Finding the location was not difficult (+1) He  basically had a warehouse that was being restocked. It was slightly empty and dusty (-1) *but  he has restocked and revamped the place now (+1)

We had a chat about how he got into makeup and  I must say his passion for something he didn't use personally, was very commendable. He was extremely passionate about other vendors selling counterfeit beauty products and gave me a little insight on how it was killing the market for the vendors who actually sold authentic products - reason; you'll have someone who has heard about the counterfeit price and expects the original to be the same price. You the vendor cannot really educate them about the product being fake or the dangers of using products that have not gone under a certain kind of testing protocol without said customer thinking you are only trying to sell your product at a ridiculous price. (At that moment we became kindred spirits) (+1)

He was fighting the same cause I was. Now he gets major points for doing some serious research about his craft. (+5)

It was a great pleasure working with him and the added bonus was his prices were actually not unreasonable (icing on the cake) (+1)

My only issue was, and this isn't directed to him alone- I had sent "I wanted to make an enquiry" and his response was "okay madam inquiry" later on in the convo I realised it's his bubbly personality but for first time customers one might take it as Sass or read it wrongly.

Solution- Vendors when you are interacting with a first time customer try and keep it as professional as you can, it doesn't mean do not be polite! It just means keep it straight to the point till you have further insight on who you are dealing with.

Will I purchase from this vendor again? Yes!!

Let me know your thoughts, experiences or comments!

The Plug got you.

JES  ISCAH

At what age did you first start using makeup?

    - Well, I got my brows trimmed by my mum at age 5 (does that count lol ) but put on foundation when I was 19yrs & in  university .

Do you remember the brand?

  - It was MAC

Why do you love makeup?

  - I love it because it's a form of art and I'm an artist .. I love to draw and paint plus I studied visual arts back in High school . Makeup helps me to express myself in terms of art and mood, that's why I love it !

    - An EyeBrow pencil !

Worst makeup experience/buy?

   - Hmm you need a 100 litre bottle of Coke  for this because it's just long lol .. But to sum it up, I ordered a set of brushes & Lipstick from an online shop here in Accra (TheBeautyBoxGh) , saw their Instagram post of the Real Technique brush set and it looked neat , kept and very attractive ! Only for the package to arrive & it looked like it was dragged on stones and looked extremely old. So I contacted the retailer and told her I had received the package & that the brushes are intact but the package looks really bad. And the Lipstick was also not sealed.

And I quote, what she replied " Maybe we should write to real techniques n colour Pop cosmetics to make a complaint about their packaging.Pls sister, if u buy it yourself from color pop in the states u will get it the same way,It is not sealed pls,
I am not in charge of manufacturing so pls don't make it look like I produced the packaging! "
